I have worked in the non-profit sector and have seen the struggles in the areas of technology and marketing. Conversely, I currently work in the private sector, and realize how proper funding and managing of technology can lead to better efficiency, productivity, documentation, sharing of Corporate/Intellectual knowledge, and an overall improvement in the health of the organization.
When I moved to the Greater DC area, I realized that I had a great opportunity to give back to society, and a community that is constantly in the shadows of the politics in Washington. I knew that even though I was not a Senior level Webmaster, or a brilliant marketer, I knew I had a great deal of the conceptual knowledge that many non-profits either don't have the time to learn, or the money to hire. Issues that nonprofits face can range from not knowing strategies to improve their brand, to increasing traffic to a website, to budget constraints, and to the basic demands of updating website pages on a regular basis. So, in 2007 I joined Greater DC Cares' Pro Bono Consulting group. From 2007 to February 2010, I have completed three major website redesigns that included transitioning the Nonprofits to a Content Management System, cheaper and more robust web host, and overall a sense of empowerment in regards to maintaining their own websites.
This site is dedicated to the knowledge that will help non-profits have the power to do technology projects on their own, or be able to "ask the important questions" when negotiating with technology companies.
UPDATE: Nov 1, 2010: I am now living in Cambridge, MA., and plan on doing some research to see if there are any Nonprofits like Greater DC Cares in Boston. If not, I will be moving forward with creating my own Nonprofit, Knowledge is Freedom Inc, and doing Pro Bono Technology work through it. I am also continuing to support Miriam's House in DC as they plan to transition to a new website layout.
